Our Story
Over the last 20 years, Tulum, Mexico has become known as a beach paradise. However, as the town has grown, so has the population of abused, neglected and abandoned dogs and cats. Seeing the sad fate of these animals, on January 1, 2022, Carmen and Juan Torres, Alma Animal Tulum’s President and co-Founder, opened Tulum, Mexico’s first and only animal shelter. Until that time, animals were being fostered in large numbers in people’s homes. If someone did not open a home to an animal, then it continued to suffer and live on the streets.
The first day of opening, the shelter was just a piece of land with homemade structures. However, it provided at least a place where the animals could be safe from the streets. Since then, permanent structures have been added that provide a minimum amount of shelter for the animals. Building continues as funds are received.
We continue to hope for additional support from our community and afar. Volunteers are needed to foster and care for animals, perform community outreach and raise awareness of the plight of abused, neglected and homeless dogs and cats.
